FAQ
1. What is glowstringing?
A: Glowstringing is the art of making nice bright trails and patterns out of glowsti
cks tied to strings. Usually you will see a glowstringer tie a glowstick to a shoe string and put one on each hand, then spin them in circles to make nice light patterns (in the dark). Sometimes, for the more advanced, a glowstringer will have four glowsticks of different colors for a different and more complex style called "handles." There are also three stick stringing variations and one handed variations.
2. How did you get into glowstringing?
A: I first saw a string raving video in middle school, but never picked anything up. Then, a friend that I met at a college showed me his skills and explained PLUR, the rave philosophy. From then on I had to impress him to pay him back for showing me such awesome skills. But after impressing him I kept going and eventually committed myself to becoming a master artist.
3. Can I learn to glowstring?
A: Anyone can. It just takes a lot of time, practice, and pain tolerance. Plus, you need good resources. GSC is pretty much all you need. HoP and DMP are other good sites. If you need supplies Extreme Glow and Glow Products are good sources for glowsticks, but you have to buy in bulk.
4. What is the most important lesson you learned in glowstringing?
A: The most important thing I learned is that everything is possible with patience and perserverence. There were so many things that I thought were impossible, but I saw someone do them and eventually spent hours to get the move down. After learning it I did it like nothing. This is a lesson I've carried on into life too.
5. What was your biggest influence in glowstringing?
A: I'd have to say William Shih. He has three videos on glowsticking.com. All I have to say is that his sick skills and determination have inspired me in ways I cannot describe.
6. Can you teach me?
A: Sure, as long as we know each other in real life.
7. How long have you been learning?
A: I've been learning since May 2005. It doesn't take that long to look impressive with this art. It does, however, take long to become an artist.
8. Do you go to clubs/raves?
A: No. I have never been to a club/rave. I've been told raves, despite the philosophy behind the culture, are just druggie hangouts. It would be nice to go to one, but I don't really find it a strong interest.
9. Why do you glowstring then?
A: I do it to enjoy my favorite genre of music, trance! That's it and that's all. I do not learn to show off, get girls, get drugs, or make money. Most of my enjoyment comes from relieving stress and enjoying the music.
10. What kind of strings do you use?
A: 45" flat white strings tied in a loop. The glowstick is within that loop. For handles I use 24" white flat strings.
11. How do you hold your strings?
A:
